NEW
BOOK REVISITS OLD SITES IN ELLICOTT CITY, MARYLAND
Celia
M. Holland wrote the book, ELLICOTT CITY, MARYLAND, MILL TOWN
U.S.A., over three decades ago, offering insider views of many
notable sites in Ellicott City, most of which are not open to the public—a
valued historic resource. Long out of print, the book had now been updated
with new information by local writers Janet P. Kusterer and Charlotte
T. Holland, Celia’s daughter, and new photographs by Charles Kyler.
The writers revisited each site included in the original book, interviewed
the current owners, and learned their stories of continued preservation
over the years. The new text, along with a variety of new photographs,
has been added to each chapter, making the book yet again a useful resource
for those who love Ellicott City and who want to learn more about its
history and residents.
Lovers of old homes everywhere will enjoy the heroic story of the McMinneman
family who have spent decades restoring one of the town’s most prominent
homes, ‘Castle Angelo’—the family cheered along with
the neighbors when the blue tarp finally came off. Readers will appreciate
the creativity of local designer Bette Chambers, whose home, ‘Search
Enclosed’ reflects her inimitable style. Those who know of the ghost
stories associated with Ellicott City will have fun with the ghosts of
‘Lilburn.’

Gulf
Coast Relief Effort Being Organized in Ellicott City
The Ellicott
City Restoration Foundation and Howard County Tourism are teaming up to
support the people of the Gulf Coast region. Business owners in historic
Ellicott City, which as its own history of flooding, “feel especially
moved by what is happening along the Gulf Coast,” said Howard County
Executive Director Rachelina Bonacci. “Tourism is such a large part
of the economic engines of New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf Coast
region that we wanted to help.”
Bonacci advised
the public to look for signs in the windows of merchants in historic Ellicott
City that are participating. The garnered funds will be counted at the
Ellicott City Fall Arts Festival on Saturday, October 15, after which
the money will be earmarked for the to-be-named recipient.

Historic
Ellicott City, Inc. Presents Longwood - The 21st Annual Decorator Show
House
Named after Napoleon's home in
exile, Longwood was built in the early nineteenth century for Dr. Gustavus
and Mary Warfield and their large family. Up until ten years ago the ninety-nine
acre property was a thoroughbred horse farm. In addition to the Federal-Greek
Revival style mansion, the property features many interesting outbuildings,
including a smoke house, several log cabins and horse barns. The house
has been meticulously restored and magnificently decorated.
After exploring the interior
of the house you are welcome to enjoy the gardens, boutique, gift shops
and on-site catering by Tersiguel's French Country Restaurant.
Historic
Ellicott City, Inc. is the show house sponsor. Proceeds from this fundraiser
are used to promote its mission of preservation, restoration, and education
in Howard County.
